Hard Disk (HDD) Fixing Section

One of the most important components in a PC
is the Hard Disk (HDD). An inadequate handling can
seriously damage it. All in all, 4 big issues may occur:

- Corrupted Firmware/Firmware Zone Fault
- Electronic Defection
- Mechanical Defection
- Logical Defection

Corrupted Firmware/Firmware Zone Fault in a HDD

The Hard Disk Firmware represents the information that is used by the
computer which helps it interact properly with the HDD. If the HDD
Firmware is corrupted or cannot be read, then the PC will not read the
information correctly and you can lose data. Most frequently, that data
on the HDD can be recovered when the HDD is fixed and reconfigured.

The electronic defection of a HDD

The most frequent electronic defections are related to the controller
(the physical board) of that particular HDD. This issue may occur with any
model or type of HDD and even the consequences of an extra tension can
be seen around the chips on the HDD controller. In this case around 80% of
the data is safe and can be recovered 100%. Some of the brands that can
have this type of problem: the Quantum Fireball series, the Western Digital HDDs,
the Maxtor HDDs, the Fujitsu MPG and MPF series.

PAY ATTENTION:

The inadequate unplugging of the IDE cables (especially at the ATX
carcasses!) may produce the burning of the HDD controller (the physical board
may be destroyed).

PAY ATTENTION:

It is not recommended to change the controllers (the physical boards)
between a functional HDD and a broken one, because each physical
board has its unique information and this change may completely destroy
the data and the HDD.

The mechanical defection of the HDDs

Much more serious than the electronic defection, this one may bring to
a partial or total loss of the data on that particular HDD. The mechanical
issues may be the consequences of the reading/writing level and
also of some defections of the HDD generator. One of the most serious issues
that can be considered a ‘mechanical defection’ is the so called "head crash".
This occurs when the writing/reading head of the HDD interacts for some
time or continuously with the HDD discs. The most frequent reasons are:
physical impact, sudden movements of the PC, static electricity, tension
voltage breakdown and mechanical defections at the reading/writing module.

HDD logical defections

One of the most simple issues, but in the same very difficult to fix that
can occur in a HDD is the so called ‘logical defection’, because this one can
differ from a simple issue of invalid entry in "file allocation table" to a complete
disaster such as the corruption and loss of the file system of a fragmented HDD!
